An Exciting Opportunity!

Early October one Saturday morning fifteen of us gathered at Woonona to pray and then go and meet our neighbours.  We planned to give a gift (home-made biscuits on this occasion) and share something of Jesus with them in the form of prayer, a Bible story or a simple gospel presentation.  Three team members prayed for us while we were out.

One family I visited that day got my attention as a that place I ought to revisit.  I visted again 2 weeks ago with a Bible and met John*. We had a great conversation (covering the Gospel, the prodigal son, prayer and the wisdom of God) - I left the Bible. I returned again this week as planned and it was raining so we sat inside and did a Discovery Bible Study on Genesis 1.  It was a fantastic time seeing John discover:  "God does it all - what did humans do to deserve this life?", "I like that we are made in God's image.", "Why?",  "Well - it means we are kind of special"; and then puzzling over humanity having "dominion" over the earth and yet God leaving the earth in need of "subduing" ... ?

John's interest in the Bible is very new, yet his insights and personal application were profound.

Four/five churches from Northern Illawarra are partnering to train believers and work ona Short Term local mission to find more people like John over the November / December period.

As we train and GO we are praying that Jesus would be Glorified, that many workers would be sent into the harvest, that we would find responsive people and start churches among them. Please pray with us - God has given us a great opportunity!

For information re fasting and praying for this initiative click here.

We really thank God for:

  • Pete Currie's (WPCC) T4T training in India resulting in immediate PoP searches and ongong disciple making
  • The great team of churches in the Northern Illawarra and the evangelistic team facilitated by Wendy Potts
  • A new DBS in Woonona led by Pete
  • Neil in Maroubra and their prayer and plans for a Christmas mango outreach; lets multiply prayer and workers!
  • Tim and James plans for sharing faith and disciple making
  • students who will reconnect with us after exams and pursue God! Amen!
  • We pray for workers to be sent out into the harvest

Good morning pastors. Pray you are well and advancing in the plans God has for you. The reason for my email is to give an update of the CityServe projects to date.

October 10th Oak Flats swimming pool. A perfect day of weather with over 120 volunteers in attendance, all of the works completed much to the surprise of council and a great partnership with the local pool committee who were incredibly grateful for the assistance. The pool and surrounds look terrific and ready for the 50 year celebration in November.

October 17th Jock Brown Oval. Another brilliant day of weather. Over 40 volunteers in attendance and all of the projects completed. The day began with another partnership of the local cricket community and CityServe. The oval and amenities look transformed.

I wanted to note that the Gospel has been shared at each of these events with both council and community members.

October 24th A family with need has been identified with the help of council and the Illawarra disability trust, so a team of 15 men will be there Saturday to erect 30 metres of pool fence and remove a large palm tree.

October 31st Little athletics field Croome rd. The combined Churches from the Albion Park area will be combining with council to transform the oval and surrounding parks.

To date we have over 20 Churches partnering across the City and hundreds of volunteers attending to assist in transforming out City, the work of these volunteers is truly inspiring.

PRAYER breakfast.
On Friday the 6th November will be holding our second prayer breakfast to celebrate the work of CityServe in our City. The keynote speaker is Margaret Court, can I please ask you encourage your congregations to purchase tickets to what we believe will be a significant event in the life of our City. Tickets can be purchased at Manna bookstore or online http://shellharbourprayerbreakfast.org/ .

Looking forward to the great plans God has for our City. Shane

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your prayer and interest in our Easter outreach activities.

We began visiting people last Wednesday testing approaches to build connection with people particularly at Easter.  Our experience in Wollongong combined with the activities of  Tim Scheuer and Wayne Forward at Nelson Bay suggests the following best sequence.

 1.    Greeting:  Hi my name is Dave and this is Fred, we are meeting our neighbours over this Easter period and wanting to share a little of the Easter blessing by giving a simple gift.  Can we offer you this gift?

2.       Give the Gift if they are OK to receive. (we gave 5-7 small easter eggs in cellophane with a ribbon, Nice!)

3.       Question listening and Dialogue:  We are wondering also if people have an opinion about Easter.  Do you have an opinion about Easter?  (Or you could ask “What do you think is the spiritual significance of Easter?)

4.       Prayer: After some discussion and interaction if you hear about a need offer to pray or:  “We are also looking to bless our community with prayer at this time. If God was to meet a need of yours or of your family, what would that be? and can we pray that now?”

Tim and Wayne with 4 teams were able to pray with 20 people our 4 teams have found 13 people with a similar openness.   We plan to follow up those who have shown interest by telling a Bible story, bridging to a simple gospel presentation, finding out if they want to know more, inviting them to a Discovery Group in their neighbourhood.  We are seeking to read the Bible with groups of potential disciples in their or a neighbour’s home (or café etc).

We now need to pray daily for God to be at work in the lives  of those we are planning to revisit (bind evil, release from bondages, ready to hear about Jesus), that they would be prepared to take the next steps of commitment to Christ Jesus.

Our next followup, and Person of peace  Search is April 11th  9am to about 2pm (includes lunch and debrief).  Let me know if you want to be a part of this, or other such events we plan to run monthly  (eg May 23rd ).

May the love of God empower each of us to partner with God and one another to  seek and save the lost.

Blessings

Dave

CityServe at Albion Park Rail: results

The weather turned on a great day for City Serve on April 18 amidst a week of rain. 130 volunteers  turned out contributing in excess of 780 hours of volunteer labour. The Albion Park Rail Community Centre received a make over with surrounding areas at Albion Oval also getting a spruce up. Amongst this work the group achieved the following list

30m3 Garden mulch spread

20m3 Soft fall Playground mulch spread

Turf base spread for top dressing and rut filling: 8m3

Planted 50 Grevilleas  in the community centre garden

Planted various herbs for the herb garden 20 x punnets

2.5 tonne of green waste removed from site.

Replaced two thirds of the grandstand timbers.

Painted the grandstand

Painted the community centre verandah posts, water tank, gates and old murals.

Painted the graffiti on the skate park

Painted the two southern amenity blocks

Repaired rendering on the amenity block

Stained the copper log fence surrounding the oval

It was great to see the community and Council partnering to improve valuable assets within the city. The energy and enthusiasm was outstanding.
