YES or NO, and other Battles

The current big one, the debate over SSM has invaded our churches and is making waves. At first glance, the fuss seems way out of proportion to it's significance. However we are now realising that the implications are huge, and therefore the battle is heating up. Some high profile Christian leaders are taking a beating.

"Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you" 1Peter 4:12

Churches have people of 'yes' and 'no' persuasions in their congregations. Most denominations are now providing guidance on how to vote (usually NO).
Members and even leaders can remain divided, caught between pastoral instincts to love everyone and a prophetic mandate to call people, and even nations, to repent.

Leaders can respond in many ways:
'We are going to get on top of this, see it for what it is, and respond'
'We have our own agenda'
'I'll present both sides and they can make up their own minds'
'What will be, will be'

But the bad news is:
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12.

There is no room for pacifism, there is a war going on.
Things are not going to change.
Being a nice person is no defence, innocent people get hurt.
The devil does't fight fair.
Not believing in satan and the demonic does not mean they will go away.
There is a sovereign God, but unfortunately satan is the prince of this world.

The good news is
We have a defence structure and weapons which are designed to be used, they are spiritual.

Our defences and weaponry:

Truth
Righteousnes
The Gospel
Faith
Salvation
The Word of God
Prayer.... all kinds of prayers.

In my walk with God, I've got further on my knees than on my feet

The same sex marriage plebiscite is upon us

There has been a huge amount of media attention given to the plebiscite to determine whether the definition of marriage should be widened.

We are aware that this is a defining moment for our culture.

The Christian position is gravitating towards the NO vote. This is due to conviction, from heeding the experience of other nations, and from gaining a deeper understanding of the implications.

The Catholic church has an excellent publication Don't Mess with Marriage, which has already offended the same sex lobby who then threatened to take the Tasmanian Archbishop to the Anti-Discrimination Commission  See story

Many large denominations including the ACL are working with the Coalition for Marriage. The general strategy is to talk to neighbours and ring friends to explain the NO position. See the range of resources and training aids.

We are at the point now where, apart from urgent prayer, the last option seems to be a letterbox drop in our region.

This is the face page of a print ready 2 sided pamphlet from the Coalition for Marriage, just right for this purpose.

Suggestions for letterbox distribution.

Churches get together with other churches in their fraternal area and simply divide up the area among the churches.

Christian leaders, who may not necessarily be pastors to grab some mates and hit the streets.

It would be terrific to have a coordinated approach.

(I personally have ordered 1000 copies from a local company and will start walking our neighbourhood asap. There is no compulsion to use this particular company)

A church where people bring friends. What does it look like?

When churchgoers are asked to invite friends to church, there can be a whole raft of reactions. Do we understand their thoughts and responses?

Some general hints to be a visitor friendly church:

Be true to the Gospel
Be relevant
Be friendly
Be clear, concise and easily understood at all times
Be comfortable

Continually ask the regulars how public 'church' could be improved. Listen.

There isn't a lot on the web written from a church visitors point of view, but there are a couple of helpful items in the following sites:
Church Marketing Sucks (has further links)

A growing, visitor friendly church is not just designed to keep regulars 'happy', but the priority is to remove the barriers for those yet to come.

The Council elections are coming

Canon Sandy Grant from St Michael's Cathedral will be giving a public lecture on the subject of 'gay' marriage on Wednesday September 13th, 7.30 pm

The lecture's title picks up a much-discussed tweet. Is it true that #loveislove? Why defend the traditional definition of marriage?
All are welcome to attend this public lecture in the Cathedral at St Michael's on Wednesday 13 September at 7:30pm. It will be followed by Q&A.
The aim of this lecture is not to direct people how to vote, but to give a thoughtful expression of the 'No' case, as well as exploring related issues such as the connection of marriage to children, and freedoms of speech and religion. (Sandy G).

'Banjo' Paterson, one of Australia's and the English speaking world's most famous poets is immortalised on our ten dollar note. His role with the Anzac battalions in the Middle East 100 years ago is one of the lesser known parts of his life. 'Banjo led a team of men who looked after and trained thousands of horses in the Middle East. Their job entailed breaking in the feral brumbies, the farmer's nags, the wild bush horses and the occasional decent pony. "New war on Christians only just beginning
CHRISTIANS, prepare for persecution. Open your eyes and choose stronger leaders for the dark days. I am not a Christian."
Andrew Bolt (Herald Sun July 30)

Yes, he's talking about Australia

This amazing editorial is a wake up call to the church.
Bolt wrote a long essay with 3 key thoughts:
Detailed the recent litany of attacks on Australian Christians
Bluntly claimed the media, especially the ABC, was anti Christian
Described us as a weak church unprepared for persecution

It's unusual to have such a significant pro Christian, well researched item in the media. The sting in the tail was the shot at the church being described as ineffectual and unprepared.
His opening sentence:
"I am not a Christian, but I am amazed that your bishops and ministers are not warning you of what is already breaking over your heads."
Points to ponder:
Are our churches a barracks or a safe haven?
There are 1000 people per pastor in the Illawarra.
If a church can't go underground tomorrow, it's in trouble now.
Living in a hostile environment drives prayer. We are "not against flesh and blood".
National leaders are looking to have one united, public, praying church behind them
Which Christian leaders speak to Australia, to states, to cities and to regions?
Who is coordinating prayer for Australia, for states, for cities and for regions?

"No government is lawful or innocent that does not recognise the moral law as the only universal law, and God as the Supreme Lawgiver and Judge, to whom nations in their national capacity, as well as individuals, are amenable."

From the DIDUNO series:

On January 1, 2000 an estimated 2 billion people around the world were transfixed on the city which was soon to host the Olympic Games.  But there was more to come when the bridge was lit up with the word eternity, and the audience around the foreshores, applauded as one.

Somewhere in their inner being they recognised the significance of this single word.

This was the legacy of a misfit in Sydney's society who had a new start in life when he was introduced to the teachings of Jesus. It is estimated that he wrote this word eternity over 500,000 times on the streets of Sydney in a thirty-three-year period. His name Arthur Stace.

John Bradfield, who designed and built the bridge and many other significant Australian projects, also had a deep faith in Jesus

A (partly humorous) note from Hazel Nizbet, contact for this initiative:
"We had churches from Dapto to Austinmer last Thursday night and on Saturday Bulli Anglican and Woonona Presbyterian Church spoke with neighbours in Sandon Point (and I did not covet balconies overlooking the sea and indoor swimming pools no I did not!)"

This event is at the Salvation Army Wollongong

Humour:

An atheist scientist came to God and said, "We've figured out how to make a man without you."
God said, "OK, let me see you do it."
So the atheist bent down to the ground and scooped up a handful. But God stopped him and said, "Oh, no you don't. Get your own dirt!"
