UK CALLS FOR ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY ON COUNTRY'S GROWING ANTI-SEMITISM

BBC boss Danny Cohen, has publicly stated, "I've never felt so uncomfortable being a Jew in the UK as I've felt in the last 12 months." In response the British government issued a statement that it is doing something about it. Anti-Semitic incidents in Britain hit record annual levels in 2014. The Gatestone Institute, in an article titled, "The Islamization of Britain in 2014," draws a direct correlation between the increase in the Muslim population in the country and the rise in anti-Semitic incidents. Great Britain has the third-largest Muslim population in the European Union, after France and Germany. With the Muslim population in Great Britain reaching 3.4 million in 2014, this represents approximately 5.3% of the overall population the Gatestone article points out.

This past summer in particular saw the highest figures of anti-Semitic incidents ever recorded, according to the Community Security Trust (CST), an organization that monitors anti-Semitism in Great Britain. CST records 543 incidents in July and August alone—more than in all of 2013. England's ITV news did a report on the issue of Islamic honour-based violence and forced marriages. The report stated that the problem is far worse than people had realized because people are afraid to speak openly about it. They fear being branded as "racists" or "Islamophobes." This new spike in anti-Semitism has left the Jewish community in Great Britain shaken and worried for their future.

Recently, a rally was held in central London to force legislators to address the issue. Community leaders have demanded a zero-tolerance approach to anti-Semitic crime, and the government is paying attention. Eric Pickles, the UK's Communities Secretary, writing in The Daily Express, compared anti-Semitism to a cancer which, when defeated, could nonetheless reappear. The only solution is constant vigilance and a strong hand, he said, pledging a zero-tolerance policy to gain control of the situation before it gets any worse. He also called out certain businesses that had caved in to pressure over the summer and allowed their shelves to be cleared of all kosher food. This act of appeasement was tantamount to an acceptance of anti-Semitism, which Pickles called "outrageous."

CANADA'S NEW PRIME MINISTER SUPPORTS ISRAEL AT UNITED NATIONS

The government of Canada’s new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has voted against the six resolutions condemning Israel which were passed by the UN General Assembly, a move hailed by the UN Watch NGO. In a statement, the group lauded Trudeau’s government for joining the United States in voting against the resolutions “and for being on track to continue without change Canada's prior policy of firmly opposing repetitive, disproportionate and one-sided resolutions -- all drafted by the Palestinians except for two by Syria -- that are designed to delegitimize Israel, the Middle East's only democracy.” So far, with final plenary or initial committee votes on 19 of the 20 annual anti-Israel resolutions, Canada's voting record is entirely unchanged from last year.

“This upholds the UN Charter's principle of equal treatment of all nations, and prejudice to none,” said UN Watch. The UN General Assembly passed the six resolutions, all of which condemned Israel and not one of which mentioned Palestinian attacks which have left 22 Israelis dead and hundreds wounded, despite the opposition of Canada, the U.S., and Australia. Trudeau was elected Prime Minister in October, replacing Stephen Harper who was a staunch supporter of Israel. Trudeau’s Liberals have also expressed support for Israel, and he recently noted that he would "support Israel and any Canadian government will." However, some analysts predicted a more critical line for Israel and a boost in support for the Palestinians in the event of a Trudeau win.

MEETING BETWEEN NETANYAHU AND PUTIN - HOW IT WENT AND WHAT IT COULD MEAN

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin have held a meeting on the sidelines of the climate change conference in Paris. Last September, Netanyahu and several senior military officials flew to Moscow to meet with Putin following Russia's deployment of troops to Syria. The climate conference provided a follow-up venue to that meeting. In the wake of Turkey's recent downing of a Russian warplane, Netanyahu said their cooperation with one another "to prevent unnecessary accidents and tragedies" has proven successful. He called the battle against the savagery and barbarism of Islamic terror "another point of contact," saying he's "very satisfied" with the level of military coordination between the two countries.

"I think this is an indication of the openness and the success of the relationship between Israel and Russia," Netanyahu said. For his part, Putin said it was his pleasure to again meet with Netanyahu on the sidelines of the climate conference after their detailed talks in Moscow. While acknowledging "the many dramatic developments" on the ground, Putin congratulated Netanyahu on the upcoming Hanukkah holiday. Putin said the Russians also "are satisfied with the progress of bilateral relations," noting that the "mechanism" proposed and promoted by Netanyahu has worked "to prevent incidents due to the dramatic developments in the region," adding that "we also have advances in other spheres as well."

JOURNALIST ASSAULTED IN SWEDEN AS HE PRETENDS TO BE A JEW

A Swedish journalist Petter Ljunggren, who decided to walk the streets of Malmo Sweden wearing a Jewish kippah (skullcap) to check the attitudes there towards Jews, was forced to flee after he was cursed and assaulted. Shmuel Goldberg, a Jew who runs a restaurant in Malmo, described to Ljunggren what it was like to be a Jew living there. He is often spat at, with verbal abuse regularly hurled at him. Goldberg recounted an incident in which he was almost physically attacked. The attack was thwarted by a woman who told him: "You’re going to get killed if you wear a kippah here." Ljunggren, after hearing these accounts, decided to test the waters himself, and he encountered similar treatment, walking the streets wearing a kippah and a Star of David necklace.

While sitting in a cafe reading a newspaper, several people began shouting insults at him. Later, he saw a man beating his fist into his palm in a threatening gesture. Ljunggren travelled to two different areas known to be anti-Jewish. At Lindangen Centre a man, shocked to see a Jew in the area, warned him to leave. Another person called him a "Jewish swine." In Rosengard, a neighbourhood heavily populated by Muslims, dozens of men screamed anti-Semitic slurs while throwing eggs at him from windows. Ljunggren noted that most of the perpetrators of these incidents were Muslims of Middle Eastern descent, who used the Arab-Israeli context as a pretext for their anti-Semitism. He concluded that hatred of Jews has become accepted practice in Sweden.

ISRAEL LAUNCHES NEW IMPENETRABLE DEFENCE SYSTEM

Israel's new AquaShield defence system, which locates threats posed to Israel by individual divers and small maritime crafts, is officially up and running.  A senior Israeli Naval officer said that the latest defence system makes Israel "100 percent impervious to all such attacks. The chances of a diver infiltrating the system are zero. The system is proven and constitutes a sea barrier for Israel," the naval officer explained. Since the early days of Operation Protective Edge, when an amphibious attack perpetrated by Hamas naval terrorists succeeded in infiltrating the Israeli coastline via the sea, Israel realized how vulnerable it was from these small in size, but large in impact attacks.

Usually undetectable by your typical naval radar, Israel has been looking for a way to prevent such amphibious attacks from occurring again. The amphibious attack, which was thwarted only by the alertness of a navy spotter who saw the terrorists once they reached the Israeli shoreline, will now be preventable with the new technology. The senior Naval officer said that the Israeli navy recognized the threat of maritime infiltration even before Operation Protective Edge. However, the incident during the 50-day war expedited matters to bringing a more reliable technological solution to light.
