Greetings

As the world mourns the passing of a global citizen like Nelson Mandela, this Newsletter seeks to add to the tributes and memories he has left. The Bank of I.D.E.A.S had the privilege of contributing to one of his earliest initiatives as head of a new South African Government from 1994, namely the formulation of the first South African National Youth Policy (NYP), an experience that clearly reflected the priority he felt about young women and men-

"There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children and youth'

At the launch of the first NYP in 1997 Nelson Mandela made this statement-

‘This National Youth Policy represents an important milestone – not only for young women and men, but for our country as a whole. It is a cause of celebration and dedication. Celebration, because for the first time in the history of South Africa the aspirations, needs and conditions of young men and women have been formally recognised and articulated through a major policy initiative. Dedication, because if the vision and strategies outlined in this policy are to become reality, we must all dedicate ourselves to the development of your young men and women.’

May his words at one of his last public events in Trafalgar Square echo -

“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.”

This Newsletter contains other classic Nelson Mandela quotes.

cid:image003.jpg@01CF0260.058B6090As mentioned last month, the Bank of I.D.E.A.S. has decided to instigate its own global monthly recognition awards scheme- the Global Community Builder Giraffe Awards to honour people who have taken risk, stepped up and “Stuck out their heads, and made a difference at the community level”. Each month we plan to highlight such a Community Builder. This monthly recipient is Brodie McCulloch, the youthful driving force behind the social enterprise - Spacecubed in Perth, Western Australia.

Brodie is motivated by the rapid change he sees in people who previously have not run business or even considered what they were doing as innovation and entrepreneurial. He has focused on reducing the barrier for anyone with a social, environmental or economic idea or change to get things up and run more quickly and be connected with the right people.

As the wonderful time of Christmas falls upon us, we at the Bank of I.D.E.A.S. like to wish you and your families a wonderful and meaningful seasonal experience, and may the coming year see the fulfilment of so many of your personal and professional dreams.
